One of my former students was a SWERVE bicycle recipient, and I watched it change his entire year. I want to put my skillset to use in the most impactful way possible. What better way to do that than through this incredible organization? I’ve see it’s impact happen right before my eyes! I’m thrilled to serve on the SWERVE Foundation Board, as I have the ability to impact young lives and help shape little minds. My goal is to be a light to ask many people as I possibly can. This organization compels me to do just that.”
Darren Shrum is an entrepreneur, salesman, craftsman and the First Cowboy of Oklahoma State University. He and his wife, Dr. Kayse Shrum, have been married for nearly 30 years. Dr. Shrum became the 19th president of Oklahoma State University on July 1, 2021.
A graduate from the University of Central Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science in education, Darren quickly entered management for Walmart. From there, he became a leader in sales for companies like Zebco and Abbott Laboratories. For three years, he increased sales for some of the world’s best known brands including Zebco, Igloo and Remington Clothing. He also co-conceived a new product line, Red Rhino Reel, to capture the market share of intermediate anglers. It catapulted to a top selling product line for Zebco.
During his time at Abbott Laboratories — a company that creates break-through products in diagnostics, medical devices, nutrition and pharmaceuticals — he was a senior sales manager and district manager with oversight in Oklahoma and Texas. He had responsibility for more than $5 million in sales revenue.
In 2007, Darren struck out on his own, opening a 12,000 square-foot fitness center close to his Coweta home in Muskogee, identifying a growing segment of fitness consumers and catering to their needs. The membership grew to 2,100 by the time he sold the business three years later to open a new venture: FTD Motors LLC. The high-end automobile restoration business is still turning vintage cars and trucks into showstoppers.
Since Dr. Shrum took the helm at OSU, Darren has embraced his role as First Cowboy, supporting the faculty, students and staff at the university. A fitness buff and former collegiate athlete himself, Darren works out with Cowboy athletes. He has a heart for philanthropy and is an enthusiastic leader and participant in projects that make OSU, Stillwater and Payne County a better place. He has long been involved in supporting groups like Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Payne County Youth Services, Special Olympics Oklahoma and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Darren and Kayse Shrum have six children. When their three biological children were in junior high and middle school, the couple adopted three children. Darren traveled 8,000 miles to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. When he was at the orphanages, it was as if the decisions were already made on which would be their children. They added Joseph, Kilientn and Kason to the family to join Colton, Kyndall and Karsyn.
